Freeport Jodi Miller says law enforcement technology has made a big difference in the Freeport Police
Department’s efforts to reduce crime in the community and she would like to see more added.

“Technology has helped our police respond to crimes and solve them,” says Mayor Miller. “As we have
rebuilt the staffing of our department and have added more detectives, it’s time to add more
technology to make our community safer.”

Freeport installed its first shot spotter—a device that detects gunfire and can help reduce response
times by police—in 2022 and added a second shot spotter device in 2024.

Mayor Miller would like to see a third shot spotter installed in 2025 to triple the area covered by the
technology.
In addition to gunfire detection technology, the Freeport Police Department installed its first license
plate reader in 2023. Mayor Miller says the license plate reader has helped detectives solve cases of
theft, gun shots, and homicides.

Mayor Miller says she supports adding a second license plate reader in Freeport and would like the
Freeport Police Department to explore the use of real time cameras in conjunction with their license
plate readers.

“We will always look to incorporate strategies that improve the safety of all residents of our
community,” says Mayor Miller. “The use of technology is just one of many strategies we will be
pursuing over the next four years.”
